In a trademark infringement case, Warner Brothers has sued the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) over the use of professional wrestler Roman Reigns wrestling maneuver the ‘Superman Punch.’
“We own the rights to all visual and audio use of Superman anything,” said Warner Bros rep Shane Russo. “This is a normal trademark case but our first against the WWE. So, we look forward to this battle.”
The WWE would have to stop commentators refer to the wrestling move as the Superman Punch, nor can they market Reigns to anyway resemble that he is as powerful Superman.
DC Comics owns all print version to Superman and is not involved in the lawsuit. With the new Batman vs. Superman film coming out in a few months, Warner Bros. is doing everything possible to protect their hit franchise and they feel pro-wrestling is below them.
Roman Reigns will fight Triple H for the WWE World Title at Wrestlemania April 4th and is pegged to be the face of the company as the previous superstar, John Cena, begins to retire and transition into acting, following in the footsteps of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.
The lawsuit will most likely be settled out of court, but the legal process could take years. The WWE is adamant in using the name ‘Superman Punch’ to make Reigns look strong.
